What are the secrets to healthy aging? The benefits we receive as we age will probably have something to do with what we want to give and, in turn, receive. Giving and Receiving are the pots of gold at either end of the elder rainbow.
Of course, giving and receiving are parts of every part of life and every action. It really is impossible to have one without the other. And when we live in balance, what we give and what we get can help us reach the pinnacle of the life experience as we become older.
But, let’s face it. Becoming older is not the same as becoming an elder. Becoming an elder means taking a path of action that provides both service and well-being. For instance, it can provide relevance to the old and value to the young. I think of this as the “Elder Trickle Down Theory.” Like any role, it requires practice to master. In other words, whatever we want to experience, it’s better to do it as an elder than an oldster.
Hello! I’m Steve Guettermann.
I guide Baby Boomers and Gen Xers to fan the flames of elderhood to create and maintain relationships that enhance self-fulfillment and bliss, while creating a Legacy of Empowerment and Right Relationship for family and friends.
This legacy enables people 50 years old and older to step away from merely getting older and step into becoming an elder, then explore and share the vast and intricate web of possibility life offers. That’s what my blog and vlog are all about. Check them out here.
In many traditional cultures, the path to becoming an elder is no accident. It begins when a child reaches a certain stage of puberty, after which some sort of initiation takes place. After that, the child is no longer a child, but considered to be an adult member of the society, with certain rights, responsibilities and expectations. This type of structure is traditional, foundational and evolutionary, and puts the new adult on the path to becoming an elder.
The Elder Adventure
Yet, elders who initiate the young also go through transformations. Robert Bly wrote in his book, Iron John, that an Australian aborigine said, “I’ve been initiating young men for forty years now, and I think I’m beginning to get it myself.”
Elder women tell me the same thing. The elder adventure is never ending. It is serving self while serving others.
Although this site may have something for almost anyone, it is specifically for the person blooming in his or her “elderhood” through conscious exploration and questioning. Metaphorically, the goal is to go beyond having a stale peanut butter sandwich to an all-you-can-eat buffet featuring your favorite foods. In other words, to experience a larger reality.
Wouldn’t it be great to live in a world where everyone has more “Aha! moments?” The “Aha moment” is the pleasure and joy we get with a sudden insight. That feeling is how the brain and body reward us for discovery. The “Aha! moment” is virtually a science unto itself, one that is much better to experience rather than just to study.
I go into this a bit with my introductory video. The blogs, vlogs, reviews and interviews I offer are designed to show the world in a slightly different light than usual. Discovery is how this site differs from many others that appeal to Boomers, Gen Xers and other seekers. There is plenty of info “out there” on getting older; there is not much on becoming an elder. The difference is profound!
If our world is at the cusp of evolutionary transformation, then we, as elders, should be, too. It is up to us to determine the form that transformation will take. While the modern world may tend to reduce us to vegetables and couch potatoes, it is imperative we remain spiritually ravenous.
Take actions that are most important and fun to you. Whatever they are, I think they will revolve around giving and receiving, and discovering the pots of gold at either end of the elder rainbow.
I tell a little of my story here. I look forward to hearing yours, as well.
